When the Cadillac XT5 debuted for the 2017 model year, it filled a void in General Motors’ lineup as the auto manufacturer’s premier midsize luxury crossover SUV. Though the now discontinued Cadillac SRX tried to fill that role up until 2016, it simply didn’t possess the pedigree to challenge German manufacturers who maintained a stronghold over the segment.
The stigma that a U.S. manufacturer couldn’t build a strong competitor in this field changed when the XT5 hit the market. Not only could Cadillac match the refinement, performance and quality demanded that buyers in the luxury SUV segment demanded, but they could do it at a more affordable price.
Now four years later, the XT5 is Cadillac’s best selling model in the United States and worldwide. It received a mild-refresh for the 2020 model year—trim level configurations were changed and GM’s 2.0L four-cylinder engine yielding 237 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque became the new standard powertrain.
These changes elevated the XT5 to an even higher level on the food chain—cementing the vehicle as a true luxury midsize crossover and the new industry standard.
2020 Cadillac XT5 Luxury
The 2020 Cadillac XT5 is available in three trim levels—Luxury, Premium Luxury and Sport. The XT5 Luxury starts at $45,090 after destination and comes with an impressive host of standard features. It features the aforementioned 2.0L turbocharged engine, a 9-speed automatic transmission and is available in FWD or AWD (+$2100) configurations. It also adds a standard suite of safety and driver assistance technology features like LED IntelliBeam headlights, automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, safety alert seat and front and rear park assist.
2020 Cadillac XT5 Premium Luxury
The 2020 Cadillac XT5 Premium Luxury takes it a step even further, adding wireless charging and an UltraView power sunroof as standard equipment. Starting at $49,790, the Premium Luxury features the same drivetrain as the Luxury base trim. However, a more powerful 3.6L V6 is now available for only $1000 extra, delivering 310 horsepower and 271 lb-ft of torque. Like the Luxury, AWD can be added for only $2000 extra.
The Premium Luxury also adds rear cross traffic alert and lane change alert with side blind zone detection to the Luxury’s already impressive standard list of safety equipment.
2020 Cadillac XT5 Sport
The 2020 Cadillac XT5 Sport is positioned at the very top of the model lineup, and showcases the best performance and luxury that Cadillac has to offer. Starting at $56,090, the XT5 Sport comes standard with the 3.6L V6 engine and its unique Sport Control AWD system. To make the XT5’s driving dynamics even more enticing, a unique chassis damping control system was fitted that’s capable of adjusting to road conditions every two milliseconds for optimum performance and control.
The Sport also receives high-gloss black exterior accents and 20-inch 12-spoke pearl nickel-finished wheels—two inches larger than the Luxury and Premium Luxury’s standard offerings.
Cadillac XT5 vs. its Competition
Competitors like the BMW X5 (starting at $60,395) and Audi Q8 ($69,890 starting MSRP) are priced in another stratosphere and come in well above even the top-trim Cadillac XT5 Sport. With its striking good looks and luxurious cabin featuring authentic materials like genuine leather, natural woods and carbon fiber trim, the Cadillac XT5 has positioned itself as the premier luxury midsize SUV at an affordable price.
For more than a decade, the Cadillac CTS-V has held the title of America’s sport sedan. When the CTS-V debuted for the 2009 model year with a ludicrous 556-hp 6.2L supercharged LSA V8, the automotive world was simply dumbfounded. Sedans weren’t supposed to be THIS fast, but nobody better tell Cadillac that.
Fast forward to 2019, and the lauded CTS delivered its swan song. Its replacement, the CT5, debuted on the Alpha 2 platform the following year. But a high-performance halo model was still absent from the CT5 lineup.
Fortunately, the wait is almost over. The 2021 CT5-V Blackwing is set to debut in the summer of 2021, and will undoubtedly serve as the highly anticipated successor to the CTS-V.
For those that believed the heir apparent to the CTS-V was already in production, the confusion is understandable. Cadillac revamped their trim nomenclature for the 2020 Cadillac CT5, where the new “V” is positioned one notch below the halo “Blackwing” model. This is similar to how the “V-Sport” bridged the gap between lesser trims and the range-topping “V” in the past CTS model lineup.
With the 2019 CTS-V’s zero to 60 mph time of 3.6 seconds and unheralded top speed of 202 mph, the new CT5-V Blackwing will certainly have lofty expectations to live up to. Though its name may suggest otherwise, the new model won’t actually be powered by the same twin-turbocharged 4.2L Blackwing V8 that’s featured under the hood of the CT6-V Blackwing that churns out 550 hp.
Instead, the CT5-V Blackwing will feature an updated version of the CTS-V’s 6.2L Supercharged V8 engine tweaked to make an estimated 650 horsepower and comparable torque. But the biggest change by far is the availability of a manual transmission.
You heard that right—the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing will be the only car in the segment offering three pedals. The lack of a manual was perhaps the only viable complaint anybody could muster about the 2016-2019 CTS-Vs. After offering the six-speed in the 2009-2014 CTS-Vs, Cadillac inexplicably dropped the Tremec as an option for the third generation model and offered an eight-speed automatic as the only option.
This oversight was seen as a slight to enthusiasts, who were given the option of rowing their own gears in other LT4-equipped models like the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and C7 Corvette Z06. With the CT5-V Blackwing, all will be restored in the universe with the manual’s inclusion. In an effort not to leave anyone out, a 10-speed automatic will also be available for drivers who prefer the transmission to do the shifting for them.
Beyond powertrain information, very little has been revealed about the CT5-V Blackwing. Spy images captured last month revealed a prototype wearing staggered multi-spoke satin bronze wheels wrapped in wide 275/35/19 and 305/30/19 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S performance rubber. A taller rear decklid spoiler can also be spotted beneath the camouflage.
Pricing hasn’t been announced, but the CT5-V Blackwing is expected to start around $85,000—undercutting its German competitors like the BMW M5 and Mercedes-AMG E63 S. The lauded 2019 CTS-V started just below $88,000, so you can expect an even more powerful, agile, and customizable 2021 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing to provide an even better value.
5 Reasons Luxury SUVs are Worth the Money
There are different opinions out there when it comes to purchasing a luxury SUV. The biggest part of the debate tends to land on the idea of whether or not they are worth the price. This is a valid concern considering cars depreciate as soon as you drive them off of the lot. In spite of this, there are five very good reasons why luxury SUVs are worth the price.
1. Service Standards
When it comes to standards of service, luxury brands have a monopoly on the market. The standards by which they operate can not be rivaled by the non-luxury brands. Some of the things you can look forward to with a luxury SUV are a mix of luxuries and conveniences:
- An array of complimentary services
- Mobile technicians that come to you
- Free car pick up when your car needs to be brought into the shop
- Complimentary loaner while your vehicle is being serviced
- Comprehensive maintenance
2. The Best Technology
In a tech-driven society, the importance of having the best technology can not be understated. When you purchase a luxury SUV your vehicle will be equipped with top of the line tech to add to the luxurious drive you are going to have. When you go with a different SUV brand, there will be technology but it won’t be able to compete with what the luxury brands offer.
3. Exclusive Travel Deals
Many of the luxury SUV brands have partnered with restaurants and hotels to offer their customers exclusive travel deals. This can include discounts on top hotels or exclusive dining at top restaurants. Perks like these are one of the many bonuses to being an owner of a luxury SUV.
4. Resale Value
Even though all cars, including luxury SUVs, depreciate as soon as they are driven off of the lot, the resale value on a luxury SUV is much higher than the economy competitors. If you decide to trade your SUV in a few years down the road, you will get more for your trade or sale then you would for a different brand. Since many drivers don’t drive their vehicles for more than five to six years, resale value is important on a luxury SUV.
5. More Safety Features
Luxury SUVs do have far more safety features than their less expensive cousins. This usually includes lane keep assist, more cameras, airbags all throughout the vehicle, the ability to dial for help, smart braking, and alert technology, among other things. Having these safety features might be the most important reason why luxury SUVs are worth the money. It is true that other SUVs have safety features that are adequate but the luxury brands take safety to the next level.
If you still have doubts about whether or not luxury SUVs are worth the money, take a look for yourself. Orr Cadillac of Fort Smith wants to show you all of the valuable features in a luxury SUV. Call or go in today to schedule a test drive.
There is a buzz of excitement that has been generated by the redesigned 2021 Escalade. There are some amazing features that have started the buzz and one of those is the semi-hands free driving system. This is a feature that Cadillac has added to be able to compete with the other car companies that offer hands-free driving such as Tesla and Audi.
While it hasn’t been released yet we know most of what we need to know about the features and pricing. We also know the release date.
What is Cadillac Super Cruise?
Cadillac Super Cruise is a feature that is going to be released with some of the new 2021 models. The new Escalade is going to be released with this feature. While there isn’t really a full auto-pilot vehicle like we have seen in futuristic movies, the semi-hands free feature is as close as some of us will get.
Cadillac Super Cruise is billed as full autopilot but there are some things that you need to know. One of the features of this is the driver attention system. That’s right, to use this system you have to be paying attention. You can’t sleep or read a book.
The good news is that when you are on a compatible highway or a highway in the car’s map system, you will be able to take your hands off of the wheel and feet off of the pedals. Provided there is no heavy traffic.
This feature works with a detailed and constantly updated map system as well as GPS to guide the car.
2021 Cadillac Escalade Price
When you think about a large SUV with a feature like Super Cruise you may wonder what the price will be and if it could possibly be affordable. It certainly isn’t the least expensive SUV on the market.
The 2021 Cadillac Escalade has a starting price of $77,000 for the Luxury edition and will go up from there depending on trim level and added features. Fortunately, all of the new Cadillacs will have Super Cruise which means even the base models could have it as standard.
If you are wanting the best of the best luxury that Cadillac has to offer, then you will be paying over $100,000. That is $101,290 for the Platinum Sport edition to be exact, and that price doesn’t include the extra features that can be added.
2021 Cadillac Escalade Release Date
The 2021 Cadillac Escalade is actually available to order now. However, it won’t be released to the dealerships until late 2020. This could be around the holidays but that is purely speculation. Although some drivers would love to get this full-sized SUV as a Christmas gift, there has not been a firm date released.
When the new Cadillac Escalade does hit the showrooms, there will be drivers everywhere ready to discover what it is like to drive a car with autopilot.
